One of the questions we get all the time is regarding the differences between licensure and certification. Let’s have a look.
Certification
Certification requires that you pass an exam which is administered by an accrediting agency such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). In order to take the PTCB exam, you must first apply, pay a fee and be in good standing with their state’s Board of Pharmacy requirements. If you meet all of the eligibility requirements, then you will be permitted to take the PTCB exam at an authorized testing facility.
Licensure
Some states require that you get a license to practice in the field as a pharmacy technician. You will need to apply, show proof of education and pass a criminal background check. Some states will require you to pass the PTCB exam. Once you’ve met all of those requirements, you will be allowed to practice as a pharmacy technician in your given state.
Which One Is For Me?
Curious which route is for you? For some people, the choice is made up by their respective state laws. But for some people, the choice is up to them. There are two routes you can possible pursue in order to get your certification. You can either take the exam administered by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
PTCB is widely recognized and the more accepted route for obtaining your pharmacy certification so we recommend this option to prospective entrants.
